On Authenticity + passion

Reminder to myself: you are a work in progress.

Authenticity has been a big thing on my mind lately. "being our authentic selves". It's easy to be swayed by our experiences, the people we meet, the places we've seen... without really stopping to ask ourselves, if we've remained true to ourselves and asking is this really WHO I am? Is this the direction I want to go? Do I want to emotionally and mentally invest my time into this?

I ask myself a lot lately what mark I want to leave on the world. Besides the "what are you doing now" post-college question, the bigger question to me is what am I leaving behind to let people know that I existed. I think it's something I think about DAILY actually... I find myself more and more in awe of people who come off to be very in tune with their purpose on earth and what gifts they can contribute to the service of others...whether its the gift of music, intellect, innovation, design, etc.. I really love learning about those people.

I wonder how people actually pinpoint what it is exactly what they want to do. What is it in their core that lets them know that this is exactly what they should be doing? For me, I find that my problem is that I love so many different things. Maybe it's the eternal optimist that has found enjoyment in literally every job I've had... or my need/want to learn about everything because I find SO MUCH of the world fascinating. The only problem is how you turn these things into careers...

I love travel, I love aesthetically beautiful things (i.e. accessories, interior decor), I love empowering women and working WITH like-minded women in general, I love educating myself about global issues and admiring people who are working to alleviate poverty, I love fast-paced environments and big cities, I love typography and graphic design, I love my Filipino culture.

..so many things I'd love to delve into but I know won't really know if it'll turn into a career until I've tried. such a wierd time of figuring yourself out, I will admit. There are so many people I've seen who just happen to fall into what they're doing and love it. Maybe I'm not seeking out my opportunities as best I can or making the best of the position that I am in. It's hard when you lack passion though...which goes back to my thoughts about being my authentic self and doing things only that push me, keep me driven and still staying true to myself + my desires.

time will tell and I guess this is exactly why this blog exists. Life has always been a constant ebb and flow of going through the motions and seeking out my next best opportunity.

Take Risks On Behalf Of Your Dreams (via:TheDailyLove)

It’s amazing how much life can change for the better when you take risks on behalf of your dreams.

This isn’t some airy-fairy statement. The Uni-verse made you to fulfill your purpose, so It WILL support you in doing so.

So many of us live lives that are cut off, shut down and in our comfort zone. We value certainty over love & our happiness. In the end, we’ll come to see that there is no certainty in life, only the appearance of certainty. In reality, its actually riskier to not take risks ‘cuz when you get to the end of you’re life, when you take your final breath, a thought that should cross no one’s mind will come up – “what if I had…”.

Coming to the end of your life and wondering “what if ” is a fate worse than any risk you can take now. None of us get out of life alive, so what we must remember is that it is the loving risks, adventure and our contributions to the world that count. Everything else is secondary.

The people who change the world and who truly have happiness live consciously or unconsciously like this every day. They choose to expand outside their comfort zone, instead of retreat into it. They choose to let Love win and focus on being kind instead of being right. They value scars over perfection. They add more value to life than they take from it. They let The Uni-verse guide them through their heart, instead of letting the fears of their head run their life. And when they come to the end, they rejoice, for they have been used up completely, given everything and extracted every bit of love, joy and adventure from life.

Don’t shut down. Let’s us not retreat into our comfort zones. Let’s step out. Let’s stand up. Let’s make a stand that today and everyday forward to let our faith be stronger than our fear. We prove this to ourselves through action, not just words. We back up our faith through taking constant and persistent action towards the things we say we believe and have faith in.

We set an intention to not be one of those people who gets to the end of life and wonders “what if ?”, but instead we say, “I stood for something and I made a difference”.

The promise of Life is that you are taken care of, you are supported and dreams are real. We have been given a life not to live in fear, but to step forward and live out of gifts and our dreams. This cannot happen if you do not make the choice in every moment to be ALL IN when it comes to your dreams.

There is a mysterious force that helps us when we risk on behalf of our dreams. This is The Uni-verse silently guiding our paths, opening the perfect doors for us and closing the dead ends.

Roll with the punches, go with the flow, let go and consciously design your life to be lived on behalf of your dreams instead of your fear. And remember, how long must you try? That’s right. Until.

Who do you want to be when you look back on your life? Do you want to wonder “what if”? Or smile knowing you gave it your all. Right now, you have a choice to change the outcome of that moment. What’ll it be?

Love,

Mastin

Milestone.

On Monday, the sorority that me and 9 friends founded in the Spring of 2008 became officially recognized by UCLA. The fulfillment of this dream of ours is something that has truly convinced me that no matter how difficult, how long and how much struggle you have to endure to achieve something, hard work always pays off. With a charter comes opportunity and this opportunity includes a platform and support to share who we are, what we LIVE by and what we strive for as women.

To some, the greek world and sororities/fraternities are just people "paying" for their friends or just a group of people who are all the same and follow one another. I don't ever try to preach and try to change anyone's views, because those are theirs, but I only hope to serve an example that it is so much more than what movies and stereotypes make it out to be. And Yes, I am a proud sorority sister, if not a former pledgemom to an Alpha Class and President. If I didn't believe in the universal need for WOMEN to have role models, to be challenged to reach their full potential, to be self-confident individuals in all their endeavors, to have GOALS to work for, to open opportunities for one another and so many other things, I wouldn't love it as much as I do.

Having seen our sorority finally get the recognition I truly believe it deserved, I hope it also serves as an example that a sorority isn't just a bunch of girls who are handed letters, are all the same, lack substance, are catty and just party all week long, if anything, we are far from it. And it would be a huge disservice to all the women that actually work their ass off and sacrificed so much for anyone to label us any other way. Contrary to popular belief... women can work together, be grown women, sit and conduct meetings, handle business, throw events for the betterment of even more women, network, give back to the community, and still attend a prestigious university all at the same time.

To me, this is even beyond being in a sorority or the politics that is included in it. To me it's more about being the strong women that we are who are able to build an amazing network of women from the ground up who mentor one another, advise one another, encourage one another, praise one another and above all, love one another because we ARE women.

Sorry I'm just rambling now, but thank you to everyone who truly truly believed in us and use us as an inspiration. I am so humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude from everyone who gave us a chance, who showed us kindness, who recognized our hard work when we were just about ready to give up. To be the President this year, this is one of the greatest gifts I could ask for and it is not my doing, but the efforts of 16 amazing women who continually push me to be a better leader and example.

I strive for longevity and our continued success.
Always, I am thankful.

Today I am in a happy and hopeful place in my life.
This quarter is the beginning of a great phase of my life despite it being filled with the unknown.

I am not really sure where I'll end up after college or what I'll be doing. (scary, indeed)
I don't know if our work will shine in our favor to get our sorority charter from UCLA.
I don't know if time will allow itself for us to finish our requirements to get our chapterhood from Chi Delta Theta.

Not knowing sometimes is the fun of life. I've learned that being thrown into the unknown and being in a place where your future lies in the opinions of others.. forces you to TRULY believe in yourSELF and TRUST that the work that you have done up to this point is deserving of recognition. (If you don't believe in yourself, no one else will) It forces you to be BRAVE and STRONG, if not for yourself, then for the people that put their trust in you to lead them...despite whether or not the outcome will work out in your favor. Above all, it's about leaving nothing to chance, and always giving your greatest effort, so that even when things don't go the way you prefer or planned, you know that there was nothing else you could have done to change the outcome.

Woman to Woman

Reposting from another woman I admire in the fashion game, Melody Ehsani

I am so inspired by young people in general, but especially all the young girls I see who are charting their own course. You truly are the future. If I may, Id like to encourage you to keep working to follow your dreams.

Dont fall captive to your thoughts, unless they are positive ones.

Know yourself.

Know the difference between Sacrifice and Compromise. Never sacrifice anything that is YOU for anyone.

Never confuse Compassion for Responsibility…just because you are empathetic to someone, doesnt mean you have to fix them.

Set your standards high, and remember they are yours. They determine your market value and help you to separate yourself from individuals who arent your match, in all aspects of life.

Remember that there is always support for you, and each of you has a special and uniquely designed space in this world…so wake up each day and shine, as you were intended in your own special way. -Melody Ehsani

Everyday I think about what I can do next to better my best.
I sit here, wide-eyed with my mind running quickly sifting through the ideas that form in my head.
Daily I think about my next hustle, my next goal to rise to the top of.
I keep telling myself I'm going to stop one day, but the truth is, I'm addicted.
I'm addicted to those days where I can sit with a blank paper meticulously planning my next move.
Those days where creativity, honesty and vision are bursting out of my fuckin' brain... I don't even know what to do with it or who to fuckin share it with.
Those days where my mentors drop knowledge and I can sit and truly absorb and apply every word that comes out of their mouth... hoping that one day I can be like them.

I don't know exactly yet what I want to be but sometimes I'm okay with letting the powers that be control my fate.
I want to do more than merely exist in this world.
I believe in making calculated steps towards your goals but a lot of it is just handling business.
ENVISION yourself already reaching your goals and stick to it. I notice that a lot of GREATS have a habit of doing this.
I realize that surrounding myself with people who have a hustla mentality also fuel my drive. Seeing people who work so fucking hard for something they believe in, I can't knock that, if anything, I try to learn as much as I can from these people.

As of late, I haven't felt on my A-game since the start of summer when I picked up my two internships and got elected president. Truly one of the dopest feelings ever... like everything I've worked for is finally coming to fruition. Life has its moments though and I know everything happens in phases so I'm waiting for the next feeling of bliss to come around.
I'm working on getting back to that motivated state though..
I know I can't let up.
I just NEED to keep picking at who and what inspires me to keep me FOCUSED and stay persistent about it.
MUSIC, QUOTES, BOOKS, HISTORY, LIFE, PEOPLE. All of it inspires me.
Gotta keep fuckin grindin till I get there. No fuckin' joke.
Does anyone else feel me on this?

*thanks for reading if you did, this is a whole bunch of personal random thought.. but if you can appreciate it, then I'm glad you feel me!
