Vashtie x Vibe

Read the rest of her Vibe interview here.

What sparked the idea for your fashion line, VIOLETTE?
It came out of a necessity for wanting to make things, but also I realized that my style was different from most girls... On a majority scale, girls don't necessarily dress like this and there weren't many lines that spoke to me personally or to the kind of girls that I know in the street-wear world. I worked at Stussy while I was in art school and everything was amazing for the boys. Boys had the best sneakers, they had the best t-shirts, they had the best jackets, and in my head I'm like why can't they just make them for me in my size? I still today go to Supreme. Supreme doesn't make a t-shirt small enough to fit me, and I'm not the girl that cuts up her t-shirt to wear it cutesy. I like to wear a t-shirt that fits like a t-shirt. So I wanted a line that would fit my style.

Specifically how would you describe your style?

Fashion-forward tomboy. Although I like sneakers and I like hoodies and t-shirts, I also like well-made things, the world of high-fashion is dear to me because I like things that are well-made and that's not to say that all things high-fashion are well made. I like things that are fashionable ad I like well-made tangible products and goods. You know, I have a really great handbag collection and shoe collection whether it be sneakers or heels. It spans those two worlds and it's kind of a balance.

So what do you think every girl should know before getting into the entertainment industry?
Every girl should be prepared to be shot down, to be made fun of, to be called names. You should be championing yourself because if they're not on your team, they're against you. You just have to hold it down. I think that naturally women, all of us, are guilty of wanting to please people. I don't know what that is—having to be pleasant and not being a bitch. I don't know what it is in our culture that we're taught to be very polite. You just need to be aware that if you're coming to the table with something, there's no room for anybody else to put you down. You don't have to tip-toe around what it is that you want and can do. There are times now still where I'll be in a meeting at record label talking about a video concept that I wrote, and when the executive in the office who hasn't met me sees me, he asks, 'Are you modeling in the video?' So, you have to be prepared for it. It's having a sense of humor about yourself.

damn. she's dope. this is why I love her.

Vashtie x Levi Maestro

These are two (of the many) role models in my life who live their creative passions regardless of if they have to pave their own way to do so. To me, they personify people I want to surround myself with... which are hard working, creative, visionaries who bring life and inspiration into art and media.

Levi Maestro made his own way with his incredibly influential and insightful videos showing his life, traveling around the US documenting his time with amazing musicians, artists and clothing industry heads. Watching him and hearing from other people, he seems to be one of the most humble and genuine guys in the 'industry' and I love that about him. Watching his videos always gives me that push I need to stay motivated and work hard. Please watch his videos and see for yourself!

Va$htie Kola, aka, the Downtown Sweetheart, has been someone I've been following for quite some time now. She's the ultimate coolgirl in my eyes, who is educated, well-respected by men and women alike, funny, multifaceted, has a roster of work that I respect and on top of that, she is the first female to design a Jordan! She's a director, artist, designer, party promoter and entrepreneur and if you haven't follower her work yet, do it asap!

If I could meet either of them one of these days... maaaaan, I don't know how I'd react.
